Two Bands and an Acoustic Act

Just was checking my email and have gotten a couple emails from folks in Myspace. In the process of coming and going from my Myspace account did stumble across two bands that caught my attention. Maybe it is just a case of not having looked or listened to much of anything for awhile now.

Regardless of what the cause, I found two acts that just made an impression. The first one was Agents of Karma, I checked out their page and several of their songs. They just had a classic rock sound-basically. The guitar was there. Some very cool bass-maybe a dash of funk in there. The vocals worked. Reminded me of a few bands. One tune was reminding me of the Chili Peppers. Last tune I checked out owed a serious debt to Deep Purple's Child of Time, which made me like it that much more. So this three piece has the musical chops, they have some nice original tunes, and they are willing to work within the genre - play with it.

They are doing a show this Friday at Desmond's Tavern, which i have no idea about, but from what I heard on Agents of Karma's Myspace page, might be worth finding this Friday.

This evening, as I am watching Law & Order, (yeah that is still my show. . .) I again signed into Myspace and realized I had a few friend invites outstanding. One of which was from Set theory, a band local to Westchester. I had seen various things from them before but just have not been looking or thinking bout such things. Anyway, these guys are more into a contemporary alternative sound. They only had one tune, but I liked it. Sadly as I sat listening, and digging the vocals, I read that they are now looking for a new vocalist. Regardless, I liked what heard and hope they return to the scene, vocalist and all.

Lastly, as I debated whether to sit down and write this up I realized that Lorraine Leckie was doing a show at Banjo Jim's this Saturday, December 5th, and then on the 8th it looks like she is on the radio on 99.5. Lorraine came up to Yonkers this summer and did a set at one of my last acoustic shows. She came up with another artist, a dude by the name of Wallace. Both of them did great sets, with sadly little or no audience. Regardless it worked. It was a fun gig. It is good to see she is out and about and she is definitely worth checking out!

It is easy to bitch about Myspace, but once in awhile you remember what it can offer.

Up In Danbury. . .

This Friday I wandered up to Danbury CT to Cousin Larry's. It was a good night in a cool venue. Cousin Larry's is a small place right off of Main in Danbury. I have been there a few times and pretty much every time I am impressed with the acts. Small or not they have a solid sound system, good acts, and just a good scene.

Friday was no exception. They had Dogs of Winter, Fear the State Fear the State, and an act I had not caught before - Lions of Lido. I had caught the first two on several occasions up there. Both as usual rocked.

The Dogs of Winter provided a good sampling of their new material. Do make sure to check out their new video of their song, Player Piano, that they have posted it front and center on their website! Fear the State just rocked out, having a good time with a crowd that knows them well.

Lion of Ido, however, I knew nothing about. The crowd knew something about them. They were just a cool act with some nice keyboard and guitar work. They turned my head a few times as I was getting my beer and just searching for one of the few stools at the bar. I did find them once I had the right name. . . http://www.myspace.com/lionofido

I did give them a listen to yesterday driving around. Kind of an alternative sound, if that means anything, in short I need to go catch them again. I always get sucked in by a band with a keyboard. Talking about keyboards and guitar, last week end I was down at J&Rs in NYC and picked up UFO's Lights Out CD. Damn, the CD is 30 years old, but that is where I am coming from. Still some amazing stuff on that CD.

Going back to Cousin Larry's in Danbury. It is a great place, a great scene. It is a venue for indie music and more importantly they have a crowd that comes out and supports the acts and music. I guess it is in part a local college scene complete with college radio. And of course it is on MySpace. Whatever, the mixture, however, they bring them out it is very cool to find a venue and scene just digging original live music.

Some Holiday Thoughts. . . December 24th, 2006

And while reading bizarro thoughts. . .do listen to the Wild West Podcast which just released its holiday edition complete with local and some classic holiday rock and roll! - 12/24/06

December, the holiday season is a wonderful time of year. Forget the shopping, sales and that crap. If you can strip that stuff away you can find something. And no I am not talking religion here. Yes I know Christmas and Hanukkah are religious holidays, but for me it is not about that either.

No it is simple. Christmas, Hanukkah, the holiday season is a time to celebrate life. I do latch on to the metaphors that both offer. Birth in the case of Christmas, continuance or overflow, an abundance, in lack of a better words, in the case of Hanukkah. Both come out of the everyday, but yet wonderful in reflection. Look at Christmas, which for many of is celebrated in winter or at least it use to be. And with Christmas and Hanukkah, in the holiday season, we celebrate a birth. Birth also is an overflow or an abundance of life. Move over to Hanukkah and you have what was thought sufficient for one day, lasts for seven. the candles, like life overflow and continue. There is an abundance of light.

Jump from metaphor to everyday and it is just nice to reconnect with family and friends. This year has been very nice as I have reconnected with a range of folks and kept in touch with others and I think of all of these now in the course of this season. Add to that family and it is just a rich brew. If nothing else this season asks us to reflect and consider those connections, those people past and present. This season allows one to mix these various threads, to reach out and say hello again and catch up, break bread and wine with those we encounter.

Those meetings, those get-togethers are the overflow, the celebration and sharing of it. My only thought on looking at the idea above is these things should been done through out the year, a theme I have heard before. It is just hard to do and besides, you have to start somewhere.

Sorry to get new age philosophical but once in awhile it is appropriate.
